April 2024 Community Newsletter

Letter from the Principal

April has been a whirlwind. With EOC/STAAR testing taking place on home campuses, our attendance has been a little lower, but we've made every minute on campus count.

  • Students in our Culinary and Hospitality programs hosted two Austin ISD UpClose Luncheons for community members (in addition to our regular Friday Luncheons).
  • Students in our Welding program took a tour of ACC Highland's Make It Center to participate in hands-on learning and explore one of the options available to them after high school.
  • Second and third-year students across programs participated in our 2nd Annual "Speed Interviewing" event on campus. Students rotated through 15-minute interviews with our guest interviewers (friends from Austin ISD Central Office as well as some former Clifton staff) to hone their skills as they prepare for summer job and life after graduation.
  • A group of seniors in Career Prep developed a special recipe for Earth Day using a sustainable secret ingredient and served it to guests at a "Food of the Future" tasting event at Austin ISD Central Office.
  • Our campus also hosted "Planning for College, Career & Life" this past Saturday, which included guest speakers on a range of topics: Career & Technical Education (CTE), careers in the trades, job supports through Goodwill, ACC admissions, 18+ programming for students with disabilities, and services for adults with disabilities.

Meanwhile, our assistant principal, Ms. Edson, has been visiting high school campuses across the district to meet with prospective students for next year. Based on student interest, we are looking to hire a second Culinary Arts teacher (please see below for additional information). Speaking of Ms. Edson, we'd like to congratulate her on being a FINALIST for Austin ISD Assistant Principal of the Year. We'll all be tuning in May 8th to support her at the 2024 Salute Awards. We are so fortunate to have her at Clifton.

As we look ahead to May, second and third-year students are working to complete their Industry-Based Certifications. We wish them the best of luck! Clifton finals will take place on May 13 and 14th. We are also planning a campus celebration for seniors on May 15 and 16th (more information will be sent to families with seniors). There will be NO Clifton classes May 20-23 because our buses cannot run on the half-day exam schedule at home campuses. Students should talk with their counselor, case manager, or AP about expectations for those days.
