Laundry Program

laundry room

The Clifton laundry program provides service to every school in Austin ISD. We wash aprons, potholders, and dishtowels for all school cafeterias. We provide towels to high school and middle school physical education and athletic programs, and we launder athletic uniforms for a multitude of sports. We also provide towel and sheet service to Life Skills and ESCE classes throughout the district.

Clifton has three laundry trucks that pick up and deliver laundry to all district schools. Once the laundry returns to Clifton, we have six commercial washers and seven industrial dryers to process the dirty linen. In the course of a school year, we will wash approximately 1,400,000 pounds of laundry!

Student-workers from high school Life Skills classrooms, accompanied by teaching assistants or teachers, are invited to participate in our program as part of their community-based vocational instruction. Students help with several tasks:

  • Folding towels into stacks of twenty and bundling each stack
  • Folding dishtowels into stacks of twenty-five and bundling each stack
  • Stacking potholders into stacks of twenty-five and bundling each stack
  • Folding aprons
  • Folding sheets

All students build employability skills and workplace experience. Students with valid social security numbers are paid based on the amount of work completed. Paychecks are issued each grading period.
