Transition for Students with Disabilities

Resources & Services

Austin ISD Transition Services

Transition services are activities and supports that help students with disabilities, receiving special education services, access opportunities in independent living, education and training, employment, and recreation and leisure.  If an AISD student accessing special education services needs assistance with transition planning, families may contact the Transition Team.

Region 13 Secondary Transition

Region 13 offers a range of resources and workshops related to transition services.  While some information is geared towards campus or district staff, families can also benefit from learning more about different services, programs, and opportunities.

Texas Parent to Parent

Texas Transition and Employment Guide

The Texas Transition and Employment Guide provides information on statewide services and programs that assist in the transition to life outside the public school system for students enrolled in special education programs and their parents.

Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services

The Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) Services help people with disabilities prepare for, get, keep, and grow in meaningful career paths.

Continuing Education

Austin ISD 18+ Programs

Austin ISD has several 18+ Programs for students receiving special education services who have completed all graduation requirements but need additional time and support to develop their independence in the areas of employment readiness, community participation, independent living, and social/leisure skills.  Students receiving special education services can attend 18+ programming until they have mastered identified transition goals or until the age of 22.

  • The Go Project offers different community-based sites where students participate in volunteer work internships, utilize city transportation and access the Austin community for recreation and leisure options.
  • Greenleaf Neurodiversity Community School is offered in partnership with Easter Seals with a focus on project-based learning in arts and technology, work experiences at local businesses, direct instruction in classroom and community settings, and Greenleaf's wrap-around social, recreational, and vocational learning opportunities.
  • Project SEARCH Transition-to-Work is a business-led employment preparation program for one academic year that takes place entirely at Baylor Scott & White (Oak Hill Location).  This immersion in the workplace facilitates a seamless combination of classroom instruction, career exploration, and hands-on training across different departments within the hospital.

ACC STEPS

Skills, Training, and Education for Personal Success (STEPS) is a program that provides a path for students with mild to moderate disabilities to cultivate skills for a successful future. By valuing each student's unique abilities and developing their individual potential, ACC STEPS provide educational enrichment and the skills for meaningful employment. Students graduate with confidence, self-reliance and the tools to become a vital member of the community.
